The longest nihonto (Japanese blade): This Odachi called "Norimitsu Odachi" is 377 cm long and weighs 14.5 kilograms. It´s a real, "live" shinken. It was forged as one piece. This sword is from the 15th century. Who would have used such a massive sword? What was the size of the samurai who used this sword for battle? Think how awesome it would have been if it was wielded by some huge 8ft samurai with gigantism and legend around a nearby town is that if you slay the giant, you get to keep his sword as proof.

It is a clothesline sword. Some samurai thought a long sword gave an advantage. Not necessarily, read BoFR.

I get the idea of a big sword. Why a 4 foot long tang/handle?

I studied martial arts including Kenjutsu for many years. The long handles on these swords are common. It helps with balance. Today it is rare to find them new. Todays blades are made cheaper and mass produced, most likely designed by a businessman and not a practictioner of Kenjutsu. My blade is 27.5" with a 14" handle. 10/1/2016 12:07:19 pm

Estimate 10 feet tall to swing that blade.

Swords like these were made as a testament to the swordsmiths abilities to create such a long blade and harden it propperly without it snapping in the process. It is not meant for combat (it's nowhere near sturdy enough to withstand combat wear). It's meant as a masterpiece of craftmanship to impress possible customers and other smiths.

that is plausible, however, where is all the other giant weaponry that the other blacksmiths made if such a thing was common?
