Dr. Fred Alan Wolf is an American theoretical physicist specializing in quantum physics and the relationship between physics and consciousness. He is a former physics professor at San Diego State University, and has helped to popularize science on the Discovery Channel. According to the first hypothesis of the relationship between modern physics and shamanic practices, Dr. Fred Alan Wolf concluded that all shamans perceive the universe as being made from vibrations. Within physics, vibrations are repetitive patterns that can be observed in the simplest physical systems. That being said, from the ovement of sound through the air to the invisible vibrations of light waves speeding through the universe are all evidence of vibrational motion. These waves possess a vibrational pattern, yet they also play a key role in determining how probable physical events are to take place. So when I wrote the book The Eagle's Quest, I decided that in order for me, as a physicist, to make sense of all of this, I really needed to approach it from as much of a scientific viewpoint as I could. I came up with a series of postulates or hypotheses. The first hypothesis, the major one, is that shamans see the universe as being made of primal vibrational stuff. That really tied into my understanding of quantum physics because, in quantum physics, we talk about quantum waves, which are vibrations out of which all matter eventually is created or emerges. So, there was a direct tie-in.  Dr. Fred Alan Wolf believes that quantum physics is increasingly aligning with the ideas of the ancient philosopher Plato, who believed in a reality beyond the physical world. Dr. Wolf argues that there is growing evidence for a non-physical universe—a realm that exists even though we can't directly perceive it with our senses or current scientific tools. He points out that experiences like out-of-body events, shamanic journeys, and lucid dreams hint at these non-material dimensions of reality. Although these experiences can't be repeated or measured scientifically, they suggest that there is more to reality than what is physical. Dr. Wolf explains that most of us have been taught to focus only on what we can see and touch—physical objects. However, he believes that the soul, though intangible and invisible, is a crucial force in the universe. He suggests that the soul, as the source of life and consciousness, is ultimately more significant than anything physical.  Dr. Wolf learned that, according to the teachings of the Qabalah, the universe was constructed from vibrational sound patterns of three Hebrew letters: “aleph,” “mem,” and “sheen.” These letters represent an interplay of spirit, matter, and consciousness. Consciousness is seen as consisting of waves of information that move from spirit into matter and then back into spirit. This flow of waves occurs outside of time in the sense that the entire movement is instantaneous. He explains that according to quantum physics, any conscious experience results from a dual wave action. This wave action, known as the quantum wave function, also operates beyond space and time. It represents a wave of possibilities that moves from the present to a relevant time and then returns to the present moment. Shamans, when chanting sacred songs and invocations, connect with spirits in a manner similar to the language used by Qabalists. Often, rituals and practices symbolize the resonant transfer of vibrational energy from one individual to another.
