In 1978, the USS Stein, a US Navy frigate, suddenly had an emergency that resulted in an immediate reroute to its home base – the radar system responsible for identifying submarine threats suddenly went unserviceable (US). The Stein headed for land and reached dry dock so that the engineers could examine the fault, which likely laid somewhere around the massive 27,215-kilogram (59,999 pounds) dome attached to the front of the ship’s hull. However, upon inspection of the sonar dome, the engineers found something they certainly weren’t expecting. The rubber “NOFOUL” coating of the dome was shredded, with large tears covering around 8 percent of the surface, according to a Navy magazine at the time. With some tears reaching up to around “four feet long”, the coating was damaged by something with some serious power. In fact, huge teeth were left at the bottom of most of the scratches, and witnesses noted that it looked as though a congregation of alligators had swarmed the critical piece of tech. In an effort to understand the “Stein Monster”, Navy biologist F.G Wood was called to inspect the NOFOUL coating. He noted that the teeth, or claws, found on the dome were the likely culprits of the large tears, demonstrating that they perfectly matched the width of each. He concluded it was a massive squid, owing to the structures of the teeth, but didn’t rule out something that hasn’t yet been found in the ocean. The only snag is that it has widely been reported that a giant squid with teeth like this would have to be in the region of 45 meters (150 feet) long, making it around half the length of the Statue of Liberty. Giant squid carcasses more than 65 ft long have washed up Japanese shores . Documented in 1990s and in 2000s. Captured alive on film longer than that length by numerous American, Australian and multinational biological research ships throughout the last 25 years. In 2019 the eye of a giant squid washed up on a Japanese beach. It was bigger than a average sedan car , weighed as much as a small humpback whale and was estimated that the squid would've been more than 100 feet long . Making it likely the squid was over 100 years old. It is probable biologically that these creatures could grow longer than 150 ft. Fossils support that once they could've been way BIGGER! 400ft long!! These are beasts, living dinosaurs . Like sharks and crocodiles used to be much larger. When the seas were deeper, and planet was mostly water those giant squid must've been nightmarish . With time though, smaller seas, more humans and vessels traversesing them. The giant squid being observed are smaller. They are food for other species, deep ocean trawling has destroyed food sources of Asian islands as well as over fishing . Their cultures rely on ocean for many types of food.the giant squid has only been found in pacific ocean, warmer water. I wouldn't doubt there are still super sized squid , much of deep ocean is still unexplored. New species of squid are found yearly. Even in most unliviable environments like volcanic vents where science said no life could survive. Hundreds of species are being found in most remote places. Plus who knows how deep the Mariana trench could be. What new species will be found there? We have to wait for better submersible and cameras to survive the pressure and environment. I'm sure we will all be surprised and amazed. After all the ocean has many secrets science still cannot explain.
